The Wooden Churches of ChiloéChiloé is famous for its wooden houses and especially churches. The churches are protected by the UNESCO World Heritage Programme. This one in Castro however has some metal plating outside, which most of them don't. Before Chiloé was incredible rich on wood, but now it is almost depleted.

Los PalafitosCastro is famous for its special fishing houses, the palafitos. They are however not so convinient during a zunami where the water level rises and takes all the houses to sea. This happened last in 1960 and only few of the houses have been reconstructed.

The calm inner sea.The islands east of the main island of Chiloé form a perfect habitat for farming salmon and mussels in the far end it is possible to see farms. Chile is now the biggest exporter of salmon in the world and Chiloé produces 60% of those in huge farms.

Salmon Farm. The floating farms are moved regularly because they are very bad for the environment. The seabed is left dead beneath a salmon farm due to the food that falls to the bottom. It is through the food that the meat gets its colour and the colour is adjusted to the different markeds, e.g. Japan likes the salmon more red than europe does.

The Beach! Here we are heading for the western beach. We were incredible lucky with the weather - the annual rainfall in this place is more than 4000mm and it rains almost every day of the year.

Surf!!The sea was tremendous. The wind coming from inland created an amazing effect on the incoming waves as they broke. No picture can redo the setting.
